Lotus Live - What does it mean for you?
September 2009
At Lotusphere 2009, IBM announced the release of LotusLive (originally called Bluehouse), its Cloud based mail and collaboration platform. At the time, it was hard to get a clear understanding of what was really being released, but as the months have passed, more and more has materialised from IBM. At this point Lotus Live is very much an up and running offering covering everything from e-mail to web conferencing to social working (Connections). Time Technology are starting to get our hands dirty (except you can't actually touch anything in the Cloud!), playing with LotusLive. Customers watch out - we will be giving you a chance to experience part of the offering soon.
What is clear is that Lotus Live (along with other Cloud offerings) is a real option for most businesses, at least in part. The "part" bit being the key. The solutions now available for mail, collaboration and applications both on-premises and off-premises mean that a lot of organisations should be looking at their Lotus estate and exploring how they might be able to provide the same services (or more services) to their users in a more flexible and cost effective manner. This is what Software as a Service (SAAS) is all about. However, there are also on-premises solutions, like Lotus Foundations, that can contribute to achieving these goals. Indeed, there is still highly likely to be on-premises requirements for most businesses, even if they do embrace the Cloud offerings. Integration with other platforms, security concerns and bandwidth issues will all contribute to the need for some sort of "mix and match" environment.
