IBM generated a lot of noise around its announcement at Lotusphere 2010 that Panasonic had chosen the LotusLive Cloud based subscription service. Apparently this win was against Google and Microsoft. Panasonic will use LotusLive to provide mail and collaboration services to 380,000 users.
Cloud based computing has been given a lot of air time in IT and IBM are no exception to this. The LotusLive environment is a fully managed, hosted environment with 3 categories of per user subscription based services that can be taken individually or as a whole.
Web Conferencing
LotusLive Meetings is a full-featured online meeting service that integrates Web, audio and video conferencing.
Collaboration
LotusLive Engage is an integrated suite of tools that combines your network with web conferencing and collaboration capabilities.
IBM’s most widely used software. Lotus Notes is available as an online service. Currently for a 1000 users or more.
IBM officially launched LotusLive Labs which provides an R&D environment that combines the resources of IBM Research with Lotus. Applications include a new set LotusLive technologies:
- Slide Library, a collaborative way to build and share presentations
- Collaborative Recorded Meetings, a service that records and instantly transcribes meeting presentations and audio/video for searching and tagging
- Event Maps, a way to visualize and interact with conference schedules
- Composer, the ability to create LotusLive mashups through the combination of the platform’s services.
Future initiatives include a web-based document editor for creating and sharing documents, presentations and spreadsheets and LotusLive support for the iPhone.
API's are being opened up to developers (who have to be an IBM business partner). This allows other vendors to build applications that can then be made available via subscription.
