8.5 Has Gone to Gold Release - What's New?

October 2007

Big changes are in store for 8.5 of Notes and Domino which has now gone to gold release.

Here are just some of the features:

  • Save disk storage space through document compression. Document compression will potentially result in significant disk space savings (typically 30%, but savings will vary), and will also minimise the amount of data sent over the network and backed up
  • Leverage the new Lotus Domino attachment and object service, a property that will help reduce the total cost of ownership by reducing redundant file attachments in a separate repository on the server
  • Quickly detect server misconfigurations, performance, and security issues. The Domino Configuration Tuner (DCT) will allow administrators to analyse servers and help find potential problems before they are encountered
  • Increase scalability and memory availability through new 64 bit platform availability: Microsoft Windows 2008 64-bit, Linux on IBM System z, and IBM AIX 64-bit platforms
  • Increase scalability and realise potential performance improvements through I/O and CPU reduction for commonly used Lotus Domino server tasks such as transaction logging, schedule, and design
  • Improve quality of service through mail routing optimisation to improve performance and speed of delivery
  • Assign policy settings to individual users and groups simply by specifying the appropriate user or group name in a policy document. For example, if a user changes jobs or organisations, administrators will not need to determine which policies need updating; the updated group information is applied the next time the effective policy is calculated for any users in that group
  • Provide broader support for roaming users through a new Roaming policy page that supports the file server roaming and Lotus Domino server roaming user functionality introduced in Lotus Notes 8.5 software (Notes Standard Client configuration only).
  • Reduce user burden with optional shared sign-on with Microsoft Windows in Lotus Notes 8.5. Users will be able to start Lotus Notes and use their Lotus Notes ID without having to provide a Lotus Notes password. Instead, users will only need to log into Microsoft Windows using their Windows password. The Notes ID will still manage Lotus Notes security
  • More easily manage user's Lotus Notes ID files via the new Lotus Domino ID Vault. Users will be able to automatically recover damaged/lost/forgotten ID files, and administrators will be able to reset individual's passwords. The ID Vault will be a security-rich mechanism that will utilise a Lotus Domino database to store protected copies of Lotus Notes ID files
  • Simplify group membership by specifying predefined criteria to automatically determine and update group membership. Administrators will be able to use the auto-populated groups feature to apply policies to users and groups based on their home servers
